A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at West Market Street United Methodist Church, 302 W Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27401. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Jan was born in Greensboro, the daughter of the late Majelle Morris and W. Roger Soles. West Market Street United Methodist Church guided Jan in her youth, where she was active in the Market Bell Ringers hand bell choir and the Chancel Choir. She also enjoyed participating in the church youth group and mission trips, playing tennis and the piano.
Jan was a graduate of Greensboro Day School, Guilford College and Campbell University Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law. While at Guilford, she sang in the College Choir and played intramural sports. Jan was presented by the Debutante Club of Greensboro. For 20 years Jan served as an Assistant Attorney General in North Carolina, spending much of that time as Counsel for Dorthea Dix Hospital.
Jan was compassionate and thoroughly enjoyed helping others, generously sharing her special encouragement, support, time and energy to all that knew her. Jan was an avid cross-stitcher, creating many wonderful hand stitched masterpieces which she loved giving to family and friends. She was a member of the City Club of Raleigh and the Rotary Club of North Raleigh, where she recently served as the secretary. Jan and her husband Steven loved to travel, visiting faraway places such as Alaska, Tahiti and Europe.
Jan was the ultimate North Carolina Tar Heel basketball and football fan. She absolutely loved her “Heels” and there was never any misunderstanding how she was feeling when they won or lost.
Jan is survived by her husband Steven Walter Nelson; brother, William Roger Soles, Jr. of Greensboro; nephews, W. Roger Soles, III of Greensboro, Daniel Dickens of Tennessee, Richard “KC” Nelson of South Carolina, Stephen Bedenbaugh of South Carolina, and Walter Nelson, who is serving our nation in the Navy from South Carolina; and nieces Catherine Reid Soles of New York, Amber Ellisor of South Carolina, Aleigha Nelson of South Carolina, Mckenzie Dudley of South Carolina and 10 great nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her Miniature Schnauzer “Snickers.”
