Jean Wilson Martin Spangler passed away peacefully Jan 14, 2025 , at the age of 96 ,and has gone on to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was born in Media Pennsylvania, April 17 1928 , to John Wilson Martin and Frances Freeman Martin . She obtained an RN degree from the University of Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing, and a degree in Nursing Education from the University of Pennsylvania. During this time she met a medical student, Ernest Spangler. After marrying on their graduation day June 18, 1952, they moved around for Ernest’s training and early career, eventually settling in Greensboro, NC, where Ernest practiced radiology, and together they raised 5 children.
Jean was a devoted, and supportive wife and mother, but most of all she was a kind, patient and loving person, with a unique ability to laugh at herself and find humor even in the most trying circumstances. She was passionate about sharing God’s love and describing how her relationship with her Savior served as a guiding light in her life. She actively supported her children’s and Ernest’s many activities, yet Jean was busy in her own right, particularly at Starmount Presbyterian Church, where she served faithfully as a Sunday School Teacher, Elder and Circle member for many years. She was also active in the women’s Medical Auxiliary, bridge clubs, and art classes. She enjoyed reading, cooking, crossword puzzles, painting, birdwatching and gardening. She was later involved with her 16 grandchildren, notably, taking them shopping each on their birthday, and attending many dance recitals, plays and other events. She and Ernest loved to travel and saw much of the world and the US. They spent their twilight years at the Presbyterian Home, River Landing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ernest, and her sister Margurite Miller. She is survived by ; daughter, Karen S. Small (Tim); sons, Ernest B. Spangler, III; Kevin M. Spangler (Karen) ; Thomas C. Spangler (Laura); and John G. Spangler (Mary). She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
