He is survived by 5 of his siblings and their families: Colleen and Gordon Farley, Anne, Jack (Juliana) and Danny Fitzpatrick, Theresa (Jimmy), James (Danielle) and Nicholas Remmey, Gretchen Hunter, Danny (MaryKate), Joseph (Adora), Sean, Paul and Lance Farley, and Mary (Scott), Joshua, Claire and Eric Van der Linden. John was predeceased by his father and mother, Dr. Robert Farley, Sr., and Theresa Hansen, brother Robert “Bobby” Farley, Jr., and brother-in-law James Fitzpatrick.
John was a curious and resourceful person since his childhood, growing up in the Sunset Hills and Hamilton Forest neighborhoods. He was known for his happy disposition, sweet smile, and Huck Finn-like antics. He loved people and made friends with everyone, including elderly neighbors whose friendships lasted their lifetimes.
John was an honor student at Grimsley High School and Weaver Academy, where he developed an interest in Aeronautical Engineering. He studied at NC State University and served in the Marine Reserves. He had his own deck-building business for many years and was admired for his carpentry skills.
John loved the outdoors and enjoyed many fishing trips and hunting excursions with his dad and brothers. Anyone who knew John could share a funny story about him. A few of his nephews like to tell when he took them with his dog to the Hamilton Lakes dock, so his dog could jump in the water. When they saw fish in the lake the boys bemoaned they didn’t have poles with them. John gathered sticks and grabbed some string from his car and made the boys fishing poles on the spot, and soon after they were catching fish. Their uncle’s spontaneous ingenuity and fun-loving nature inspired awe in his young nephews.
John was well-loved and will be deeply missed. Rest in God’s peace dear brother.
