
Joseph Herbert Norton, 90, formerly of Chesapeake, VA died February 27, 2013 in Greensboro, NC. Herb was born in South Norfolk, VA March 27, 1922 of the late Joseph Herbert Norton Sr. and the late Kate McCoy Norton.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 6 at 1 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greensboro, followed by a reception in the Haywood Duke room. The inurnment will be a private service at a later date in Chesapeake, VA.
Herb was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Mildred B Norton and son Joseph H, Norton III. He is survived by his daughter Virginia Norton Herring of Greensboro, NC, son David L. Norton of Chesapeake, VA, 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Herb served in the Navy during World War II, then worked as a civil service employee at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, from which he retired 1973 after 30 years service. He then founded the J. H. Norton Company, now known s Norton Sandblasting Equipment. In 1985 he retired a second time and he and Mildred spent some 15 years travelling the country in a motor home, before finally settling into a retirement home in Greensboro.
Herb was a member of Great Bridge Lodge #257, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons. He was a Past High Priest of Ionic Royal Arch Chapter; a member of Great Bridge Royal Arch Masons Chapter 82; a member of the Scottish Rite; Past Eminent Commander of Grice Commandery #16, Knights Templar; a member Jerusalem Shrine Temple in New Orleans, LA; member of Khedive Shrine Temple, where he served as Commodore of the Khedive Yacht Club and International Fleet Captain of the Shrine Yacht Clubs.
