Laura Matthews King of McLeansville, 92, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 6, 2018. She was born the fifth of ten children as Laura Beth Matthews December 6, 1925 in Dunn, North Carolina to the late William Marchie Matthews and Rossie Starling Matthews.
Laura was a 1944 graduate of Mingo School, a devoted member of Magnolia Street Baptist Church since 1958, and a retiree of the Moses Cone Health System after 43 years of service. Laura was married to Preston Thomas King on August 10, 1947 who preceded her in death in 1984. Together they had three children William Thomas “Tommy”, Peggy Ruth, and Patricia Diane. In addition to her parents and husband, Laura was preceded in death by her children Peggy (1988) and Tommy (2018), her grandson William Travis Crews (1980), and seven of her brothers and sisters.
Laura is survived by her brother Charles Matthews and wife Marilyn of Benson, her sister Berniece Naylor and husband Grady of Roseboro, daughter Patricia Wallace of Danville, Virginia; daughter-in-law Sara King of Benson; son-in-law Russell Welker of Julian; granddaughter Kristie Walls and husband Ian, their children Caleb, Savanna, and Mackenzie; grandson Jeffrey King and wife Leigh, and their son Jude; granddaughter Rita Cook and husband Brian, their children Kaitlyn, Christina, and Cassie; grandson Tom Crews, grandson Clay Welker and wife Heather, and their son Liam; grandson Brandon Crews and his son Caden; grandson Matthew King and wife Lauren, their children Joshua, Ava, and Emily; grandson Ben Welker and wife Amy, and their children Gabe, Lily, Cole; grandson Bill Crews and his children Austin, Ryan, and Lilly; and granddaughter Carrie Crews and fiancée David Keller.
A funeral service will be held at Magnolia Street Baptist Church on Monday June 11th at 12:00 pm with Pastor Dave Lindeman officiating; interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park at 1:00 pm. The family will receive friends at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home at 515 North Elm Street, Greensboro, North Carolina 27401 on Sunday June 10th from 5:00-7:00 pm.
