Luther Wayne “Captain” Jones was a devoted husband of 49 years, loving father, loyal brother and a man of God. He leaves a legacy of knowing the value of hard work, commitment to family and faith in Christ. He was born in 1944 in Guilford County to the late Luther Thomas and Thelma Wilson Jones and passed away on February 15, 2021 at 76 years of age.
Services to celebrate his life will be at 2 PM, Friday, February 19, 2021 at New Horizon Church of The Nazarene, 4221 Randleman Road, Greensboro, NC 27406, followed by interment at Westminster Gardens Cemetery. Captain graduated from Grimsley Senior High School in Greensboro. He started his forty-year career as a truck driver in 1975 and retired from Eagle Transport in 2009. Captain loved his work as it allowed him to see much of the US and Canada and meet people from all walks of life. He loved a tall tale or practical joke and was a great storyteller. His favorite time of year was right after Halloween, as that is when work began on his Christmas light extravaganza. Captain loved the reaction of happy children and neighbors to his holiday display. Christmas wasn’t Christmas without his lights and a big box of chocolates! Captain was a jack-of-all trades, (who owned every tool a person could ever need) and an enthusiastic flower and vegetable gardener who loved to make his own salsa and can his bounty. He was a man of great faith and recently became of member of New Horizon Church of The Nazarene. His health kept him from attending regularly but he loved his church family.
In October of 1972, he married his life partner Wanda LaPrade Jones to whom he was lovingly supportive and dedicated. In addition to Wanda, he is survived by his children and spouses, George “Kit” and Buffie Jones of Greensboro, Angelia and Jeff Horm of Randleman and Luther T. and Sandy Jones of Greensboro; grandchildren, Austin Wayne Jones, Justin Jeffrey Horm, Kathryn Anne Horm, Luke Jones and Jessica Jones; siblings and their spouses, Thomas “Joe” and Nancy Jones, Marvin “Bo” and Debbie Jones both of Browns Summit and Lorene and Bobby Clayton of Walnut Cove; sister-in-law and husband, Toni and Jerry Thornburg of Pleasant Garden; several nieces and nephews and his grand dog, Slash. In addition to his parents, his brother, Donald “Doodles” Jones preceded him in death.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Horizon Church of The Nazarene. Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm chapel is assisting the Jones Family.
