Margie Ellen Abernethy

A gathering of friends and family, to celebrate Margie’s life, will be held on Friday, March 6,2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 West Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC 27407.

Born in Hickory, North Carolina, on September 27, 1938, to the late Gordon and Ruth Elrod, Margie was a graduate of Hickory High School and Livingston College. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Hickory, until moving to Jamestown and became a member of Jamestown United Methodist Church. While living in Hickory, she was the Director of The Catawba County Council on Aging. Margie started this agency to improve the lives of senior adults in Catawba County. This agency was very dear to her heart, and her mission was to be an advocate for the care and wellbeing of the aging, especially for those who could not advocate for themselves. She was an active member of the Jamestown Red Hat Society, whose purpose is to support women over the age of 50, in creating social connections, combating social isolation and embracing the “fun” side of aging. Margie also liked playing Bunco with her friends and participated in other social groups as well. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend who was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her. Margie took great joy and pride in the lives of family and cherished all her loved ones. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Glenn Abernethy.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Teresa Abernethy Kritzell (Tom) of Myrtle Beach, SC and Tracey Glenn Abernethy Weeks (Richard) of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren, Lon Weeks (Emily) of Wilmington, NC; Abbey Weeks of Charlotte, NC, and Stephanie Kritzell Ashton (Kyler) of Ohio; and other extended family, friends, and loved ones.
