Mary "Sissy" Guffey Apple, age 94 1/2, had a joyous reunion in Heaven, on January 28, 2019. She is in the arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ, and with her loving husband, George, her parents, and her nine siblings. After years of declining health, she is fully restored.
A service, to celebrate her life, will be at 1:45 PM, on Saturday, February 2nd, at New Bessemer Baptist Church. Pastor Bud Parrish will be officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12 PM to 1:30PM, at the church, prior to the service.
Mary was born in Guilford County, to the late George and Maude Lowe Guffey. She was raised in the White Oak community, and as a young woman, worked at Print Works Mill, (a division of Cone Mills). Caregiving came naturally for Mary. She cared for her younger siblings, as well as her mother, and one of her sisters, until their deaths. In 1945, she married George Apple, a union they celebrated for 52 years, until his passing, in 1998. George was an avid fisherman, and Mary an excellent cook, so fishing on the Outer Banks together was time well spent. Her faith in Christ was the foundation for their wonderful marriage, and providing a loving Christian home. She was a lifelong active member of Bessemer Baptist Church, now New Bessemer Baptist Church. She sang in the choir, taught the Winsome Sunday school class, and participated in WMU. Her family will remember her loving and nurturing nature and the way she doted on her grandchildren, and great grandchildren, whom she adored. Her farewell was always, "I love you, a bushel and a peck, and a hug around the neck." As Mary grew older, she enjoyed sitting by the window, watching all the Humming birds and Cardinals.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Rick Apple, and Janet Jackson, both of Greensboro; grandchildren, (to whom she was the perfect Mamaw), Laurie (Brian) Faust, and Karen (Carlton) Cook, both of Greensboro, and Courtney Apple of Kernersville; great grandchildren, Abigail, Aaron, Nathan, Daniel, and Anna; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also preceded in death by her grandson, Joseph, "Joey" Jackson, and her siblings, Viola Gant, Pauline McDaniel, J.D. Guffey, Robert Guffey, Edgebert Guffey, Burley Guffey, Gordon Guffey, Cora Lee Hill, and Carl Guffey.
