

Ray Thomas Maness, Jr., passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2025. He was born in Greensboro, NC on July 27, 1954, to Ray Thomas Maness and Shirley Irene Maness. Ray proudly served as a United States Marine from 1972 to 1976, finishing at the rank of Staff Sergeant; he was in the reserves for 2 years thereafter, but was a Marine for life. He began working for the Greensboro Police Lab and was soon sworn in as a Police Officer. He was named Rookie of the Year Police Officer for Greensboro in 1982. He also served on the Special Response Team, was president of the NC Law Enforcement Officers Association, and was a Freemason, among many other positions and honors. After retiring at the rank of Sergeant, Ray worked as a Bailiff for Guilford County and then was sworn in by the Sheriff’s Department as an Investigator for the District Attorney. In addition to serving over 50 years in law enforcement, Ray’s many hobbies included skydiving, flying a 2-seater airplane and a paraplane, running (Marine Corp Marathon, 1998), riding a Harley Davidson with friends across the U.S., and avidly hunting. He will be remembered for being an adrenaline junkie with a huge sense of adventure, for his quick wit and humor, his extremely dedicated work ethic, and for his strong loyalty to close friends and family.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Shirley Maness; sister, Teresa Norris; niece, Wendy Nelson.
Ray will be deeply missed and is survived by son, Tommy Maness; daughter/caregiver, Lisa Maness; grandson, Jacob Maness (Logan); granddaughters, Casey Balser (Dylan Ream) and Madeline Balser; great-grandson, Graham Maness; sister, Sandy Whitesell (Tony); several nieces and nephews; and by many brothers and sisters of law enforcement.

A visitation will be held from 7:00-8:30 pm on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 West Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC. A funeral will be held at 12:00 pm on Monday, December 15, 2025, at the same location. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park with military/police honors and Masonic Burial Rites.
