Born on Nov. 4, 1956 in Danville, VA, he was the son of the late Thomas Amick Swanson and Dorothy Haley Swanson. Ray attended Tunstall High School in Dry Fork, VA and graduated from James Madison University in 1979, with a BBA in Finance. His career of 45 years as a Financial Advisor, began with Scott & Stringfellow, and he later joined Intercarolina Financial Services.
Ray was a former Boy Scouts leader, current member, and past president of Four Seasons Civitan Club. He enjoyed the fellowship during his many years as a Civitan and was proud of the community projects they participated in.
Ray loved to travel, and he and Debbie enjoyed visiting many wonderful places together. When his boys were growing up, vacations to Litchfield Beach over the years were always special. He also loved attending the Kentucky Derby and Preakness horse races, and trips to Las Vegas. Ray was an avid reader of books & newspapers, and enjoyed watching westerns. Ray was a passionate NC State fan, and enthusiastically cheered for both their basketball and football teams.
Ray is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Debbie H. Swanson, his adored sons, Michael (Erin) Swanson of Charlotte, and Cameron Swanson of Greensboro. He is also survived by his brother Charles (Julia) Swanson, sisters Anne (Mickey) Puryear, Sue Robertson, and many other family members and close friends. Ray was preceded in death by his brothers, Jimmy Swanson and Johnny Swanson. His animal companions were always very dear to him, and he leaves behind his cat, Jack, and German Shephard, Joey.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, March 17, at Lawndale Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Jon Boling. A reception will follow the service.
