Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, August 30, 2011, at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Chapel, with Pastors Rusty Parsons and Mark Shelley officiating. Burial will follow at Westminster Gardens Cemetery.
Born August 13, 1927 in Gibsonville, to the late Raymond Edgar Osborne and Clie Thornburg Osborne, Ed was a member of Lindley Park Baptist Church; he had been attending Centre Friends Meeting more recently. After serving fifteen years in the United States Maritime Service, he owned and operated a service station and a recreational vehicle sales business in Greensboro. Once he retired, he moved back home to Pleasant Garden and began gardening, sharing his vegetables with friends and family for many years. Despite a massive heart attack in early April, he lived to plant one last garden and to enjoy a plentiful harvest this summer. Ed was also known for his intricate woodworking. Dubbed “The Cane Maker” by the producers of “Roy’s Folks,” he gave away over 2,000 hand-crafted canes to friends, charities, and even strangers on the street. Ed was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the American Legion. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, A. Willard Osborne.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Phyllis; his daughter, Carol; brother, Harold and his wife Corrina; sisters, Sally Johansen, Hazel Younger and her husband Bill, and Inez Paschal and her husband Ronnie; sister-in-law, Thelma; and a large caring family of nieces, nephews, and their children.
The family wishes to extend their special gratitude to all who have been so kind, supportive, and helpful, especially during the last five months of Ed’s illness.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 pm Monday, August 29, 2011, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Centre Friends Meeting, 325 NC 62 East, Greensboro, NC 27406.
