Ruth Rushmore Smith

Ruth Rushmore Smith passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025 in Greensboro, NC from complications related to Alzheimer's disease. She was 91 years old.

Ruth was born on August 26th, 1933 in Plattsburgh, NY. She spent most of her childhood years in Ausable Forks, NY. She was the oldest daughter of Margaret James Rushmore and Donald Rushmore.

Ruth was married on June 18th, 1955 to Keith Quentin Smith in Cortland, NY. They were married for 56 amazing years spending the majority of their married years raising a family in upstate NY before retiring to Deming New Mexico.

Ruth held a Masters Degree in Education and was an elementary Physical Education teacher for more than 30 years in the Shenendehowa School district in Clifton Park NY.

Ruth was an avid athlete all of her life. While raising a family and working, she played tennis proficiently. Later in her life Ruth competed in many Senior Games bringing home a plethora of medals in track and field and table tennis. When Ruth was 80 she found pickleball and found that to be a wonderful way to utilize her tennis skills and meet many new people in her new home of Greensboro.

Ruth is survived by her three children (Bryan of Rexford, NY, Lynn Arnold and Nancy Solomon of Greensboro, NC). She had five grandchildren (Danica Willoughby, Kyle and Shannon Arnold, and Jon and Julia Solomon) and 4 great-grandchildren from Danica (lan and Sean Willoughby, Natalie and Vivian Keddy). Ruth is also survived by her sister Doris MacDonnell from Forestport, NY).

No services will be held as the family will be fulfilling Ruth's wishes to spread her ashes with her husband's in the Adirondack mountains in upstate NY.

The family would like to thank the extraordinary caregivers who cared for Ruth in her final years. Candice Moore, Quincelyn Wilson, Pernett Brown, Taca Lowe, Nicole Abel and Jackie Pate were loyal and loving friends to Ruth and she cared for them deeply as well.
