Sherman Lee Canter, age 87, passed away Monday, February 19, 2018 at home surrounded by his family. A funeral service will be held at Jamestown United Methodist Church on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 1 o’clock. Visitation will be immediately after the service. Interment will follow at Guilford Memorial Park at 3:30pm.
Sherman is survived by his wife of 64 years, Edna Tew Canter, daughter Gail Oliver and husband James, son Kenneth Canter and wife Kelley, grandchildren, Amy Hall (Brian), Amanda Crigler (Brice), Sarah Lopatka (Brian), and Olivia Warfford (Adam). Great-grandchildren, Aiden, Jordan, Katherine and Ethan. He is also survived by his beloved sister Beulah Souther of North Wilkesboro and many very special and loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Roy, Frank, Glen, Ray, and his sister Vada Moser.
Sherman was born on April 10, 1930, in Surry County to the late Sanford and Cora Canter. The family moved to Greensboro when he was five years old.
After graduating from Sumner High School, Sherman attended Brevard College where he played basketball, baseball and football. While in college, he joined the National Guard and was called into active duty during the Korean War. He entered the US Army’s 101st Airborne Division as a Sergeant First Class and became a field wiring instructor. While in the Army, he was commissioned by the Commanding General to develop a secretive device which was later used in combat training.
Sherman enjoyed boating and skiing at the family lake house, traveling, building and remodeling houses, gardening, but most of all being a tremendous father to his son and daughter and a fantastic grandfather to his granddaughters and his great grandchildren.
Sherman was always a leader in his church, community and school. He was an active member of Jamestown United Methodist Church (JUMC) where he served as Trustee and Co-chairman of the new educational building committee, and a member of the Austin Fortney Sunday School class. For many years prior to joining JUMC, he was a longtime member of Rocky Knoll Baptist Church in Greensboro where he served as deacon, choir member, trustee and chairman of the education building committee.
Sherman was a member of the Sumner Civitan Club where he served as a past president, secretary of the school advisory board for Sumner Elementary and Southern Guilford High Schools, and chairman of the Guilford County vocational advisory board. He also served on the North Carolina Employment Security Commission advisory board for 12 years.
In his younger years, Sherman was an electrical designer and extremely successful with both engineering and construction. Later, he established Sherman Canter Electric Company where he was owner/ operator until his retirement in 1990.
Sherman and his family would be honored to have memorial contributions made to the Jamestown United Methodist Church “Building a Firm Foundation” fund, 403 E. Main St., Jamestown, NC 27282.
