

Dr. Stuart Wayne McCarty passed away at the age of 85 in the early morning on July 24,2023 in hospice care at Beacon Place in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was the only child of James and Cora McCarty born on December 18,1937 in Knoxville Tennessee.
Wayne attended Knoxville public schools and graduated from The University of Tennessee with a BS in Chemistry in 1960, an MS in Chemistry in 1962, and a PHD in Chemistry in 1964 during this time he completed two years of co-op work for Union Carbide Nuclear Company at Oak Ridge Tennessee.
Dr McCarty came to Brevard in March 1964 to begin his 30-year career with Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation later to become Ecusta Mill. He began in paper and plastic film research in the packing division and retired as the company’s Director of Research.
Dr. McCarty was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Brevard for many years. He was a Deacon, Chairman of the Board of Deacons, Sunday School Superintendent, and Sunday School teacher. He enjoyed his retirement years immensely, traveling, spending time with his grandchildren and gardening in his yard. He and his cat “Duke” spent many happy hours on the porch together as Wayne admired his garden and pond.
Dr. McCarty is preceded in death by his parents, James and Cora McCarty and his son Douglas McCarty. He is survived by his son Dr. Gregory McCarty and four grandchildren. He is also survived by his wife, Sarah R. McCarty, three stepchildren: Margaret McIntosh, Linda Honeycutt, and Charles Nifong, and eight step-grandchildren. All of whom loved him dearly.
The family wishes to thank the Doctors and staff at Wesley Long Hospital and Beacon Place where in his last days Wayne was given much respect, compassion and care.
