

Thomas Byron Yow Sr. passed away on Sunday, August 14, 2011. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Thursday, 2:00 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel with Pastor Kevin Bauswell officiating. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.
Thomas was born on March 19, 1918, one of seven children of Carl Hampton and Lena Osborne Yow. He served as a private in the US Army during WW II. He was employed with the Greensboro News-Record from 1936 until 1975 as Foreman of the Composing Room. Thomas was a lifetime member of the printers union, CWA Printing, Publishing and Media Workers. He also was a charter member of Spring Garden Friends Meeting and a lifetime member of the Society of Friends.
Thomas was proud of his military service and his career in publishing. He loved his family, driving road trips, his church, Ford automobiles, the beach, country music, NASCAR racing, “No mercy” checkers, the Democratic Party, construction projects and his home. He was fiercely independent to his last day.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 72 years, Vardelle D. Yow; one brother, Rev. Howard Yow of Friends Home; two sons, Thomas B. Yow Jr. and Barry D. Yow and wife Mary Ann, all of Asheboro, NC; two daughters, Brenda Y. Parker and husband Dr. H.R. Parker and Dianne Y. Porter and husband James, all of Greensboro, NC; four grandsons; Herman R. Parker III and wife Sonya of Madison, NC, Robert E. Parker of East Lansing, MI, Stiles and Keillor Fifield, both of Greensboro, NC and Cheryl Parker, widow of grandson Phillip Parker who predeceased him, of Summerfield, NC; seven great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Thursday at one o'clock pm, one hour prior to the service, at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel.
