On her 82nd birthday, Vertrise Castle Bishop, held the hands of her daughters, and with grace and dignity was welcomed to her birthday celebration in Heaven. Her husband, Marion Bishop Jr., and her Savior, Jesus Christ greeted her. A celebration of her life officiated by Reverend Bob Vorhees, will be at 2 PM, Sunday, March 24th at Lakeview Memorial Park.
Vertrise was born in Floyd County, KY to the late Bert and Ada Johnson Castle. She provided a loving Christian home for her family and was a supportive wife for over 57 years until Marion’s death in 2010. Vertrise was a gifted artist and particularly enjoyed creating landscapes in an oil medium. Reading, studying history and travel were some of her favorite past times and Hawaii, Martha’s Vineyard and their home at High Rock Lake were favorite destinations but nothing could transcend the joy of spending time with her grandchildren. Vertrise believed in the power of prayer and began and ended her day with praise and supplication.
Survivors include her daughters, Babbette (Alex) Flora and Susan Davis both of Greensboro; grandchildren, Katie (Chris) Sprayberry, Matthew Davis, Jennifer (Chris) Brown, and Nick (Kristina) Mabe; great grandchildren, Emory and Fisher Mabe and baby Sprayberry on the way; sister, Joyce Overly Goak of McLeansville; numerous nieces and nephews, and her constant feline companion, Lewis. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Bernice LaForce.
Her family would like to express their gratitude to Beacon Place and Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro for their compassionate care of Vertrise during her stay. Floral tributes are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to Beacon Place, 2502 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
