William “Bill” Lewis Clark Jr., age 84, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2025, at his home in Greensboro, North Carolina, after a courageous battle with emphysema. Bill was born on January 2, 1941, in Durham, North Carolina, and was the first baby born in the city that year. He was preceded in death by his parents, William L. Clark Sr. and Alta Irene Clark.
Bill was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He shared a deep and lasting bond with his wife, Dorothy R. Clark, affectionately known as “Charli,” with whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage. Their love story began during Bill’s time in the United States Army, where he served his final tour with the prestigious Old Guard in Washington, D.C. It was there that he met Charli, and they married a year later before settling in Greensboro, where they built a beautiful family full of love and cherished memories.
Bill’s greatest joy in life was his family. He dedicated every moment he could to them, whether it was spending time at home or enjoying a round of golf. He was a businessman who owned and operated Texaco stations on Guilford College Road and High Point Road for many years before retiring. Bill also spent nearly a decade working at the Jamestown Golf Course, where his passion for the game thrived.
He is survived by his daughter, Michele Hendrix; son, Lance Clark, and his wife, Laura Clark; sister, Gwynne Harrold and her husband, Jack Harrold; and grandchildren Hailey Hendrix, Tyler Hendrix, Joshua Haralson, Cory Clark, and Morgan Clark. Bill will be remembered for his unwavering support, dry humor, and deep compassion. He was the quiet listener in a family of talkers, always putting the needs of others first. His warm spirit and kindness touched all who knew him, and his absence will be deeply felt by his loved ones.
A memorial service celebrating Bill's life, will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 West Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC 27405. The family will receive friends and loved ones after the service, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to AuthoraCare Collective, Greater Greensboro Office (Hospice Care), 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
