William P. “Sam” Mitchem, 83, passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2011 at Moses Cone Hospital. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Wednesday, 2:00 pm at the First Lutheran Church with Pastor Charlie Zimmerman officiating.
Sam was born on Aug. 27, 1927 in Kings Mountain, NC, the son of John and Lillian Mitchem. He graduated from Kings Mountain High School. Sam served his country in the Coast Guard and the US Navy. He was employed with the Firestone Rubber Company in sales until his retirement. Sam was a member of the First Lutheran Church and always enjoyed playing golf.
Sam was preceded in death by his son Scott and grandson Blair. Those surviving is his loving wife of 63 years, Frances H. Mitchem of the home; son, Steve Mitchem and grandson, Scott Mitchem, both of Greensboro, NC.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to the nurses and staff of Moses Cone Hospital for the care, comfort and loved shown to Sam.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church, 3600 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27410.
The family will receive friends following the service on Wednesday in the Parlor at First Lutheran Church.
