July 28, 1936 – January 29, 2025
Bill Moss, a devoted veteran, successful entrepreneur, dedicated community advocate and storyteller passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 29, 2025. Born on July 28, 1936, in Yadkin County, North Carolina, he was the eldest of 12 children, growing up on his family’s tobacco farm.
From an early age, Bill developed a strong work ethic and an unwavering sense of duty—qualities that defined his life. He graduated with honors from East Bend High School, where he served as a bus driver, before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps at just 16 years old. His service took him to Korea, where he proudly served his country. In recognition of his commitment and bravery, he was awarded the Korean Commemorative War Defense Medal in 2013.
After his military service, Bill launched a successful career as the co-founder and co-owner of Lighting Creations Inc., with his beloved wife Juanita, which they operated for 48 years. Through his leadership and dedication, the company became a respected name in the lighting industry, reflecting his meticulous craftsmanship and keen business sense. He developed many relationships with local builders and supplied beautiful lighting throughout the Triad. He also helped to launch Lighting and Accessories with his daughter, Terri. He was the top recruiter for the Greensboro Builders Association and was a proud recipient of the Big Spike Award.
Even in retirement, Bill remained tireless in his service to others. A passionate storyteller and dedicated philanthropist, he took every opportunity to advocate for veterans and give back to his community. He was the driving force and founder of the Carolina Field of Honor at Triad Park, a landmark that honors local veterans from World War I to the present. Since its dedication, the memorial has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors, ensuring that the sacrifices of service members are never forgotten. In recognition of his profound impact on local history, Bill was honored with the 2015 Voices of a City Local History Award, bestowed upon individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to preserving and celebrating history.
In 2014, he was awarded, by Governor Pat McCrory, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of North Carolina’s highest civilian honors, in recognition of his exceptional service and leadership. Additionally, Bill was a recipient of the Red Cross Heroes Award and The Chapel of Four Chaplains, The Legion of Honor Humanitarian Award. His lifelong commitment to service was further exemplified by his recent recognition for 50 years of dedication to the Marine 260 Detachment. Bill was a passionate member of the Revolution Masonic Lodge 552 in Greensboro, was actively involved in Toys for Tots and tirelessly fundraised for the Wounded Warrior Project, ensuring that those who served received the support and respect they deserved.
A lifelong green thumb, Bill took great pride in his garden, cultivating award-winning tomatoes, vibrant roses, and well-tended perennials that flourished under his careful hand. His passion for growing things extended beyond plants—he nurtured relationships with the same patience and dedication, always eager to lend a hand or share wisdom with friends and neighbors. His love for NASCAR was just as unwavering, and Sundays were often spent cheering on his favorite drivers, sharing in the excitement of the race. He was even the starter for a Poconos Race in the 90s. No matter where life took him, he never turned down a chance to enjoy a scoop (or two) of his favorite ice cream, a simple joy that he believed made life just a little sweeter.
Bill deeply cared for his family, a love that carries on in the hearts of his loving family; daughters Victoria Healey and Terri Moore; granddaughter Hailey Post; sons-in-law Patrick Healey and John Moore; grandson-in-law Keisei Sugahara; brothers Tim Moss Sr. and Rex Moss; and sisters Brenda Moss-Clifton (Billy), Carol Moss Rhodes, and Jessie Moss Freeman (Jack). He is also survived by siblings-in-law Joann Peterson, Marvin Hiatt, and Joyce Moss as well as his four-legged companion, Heidi.
