Ann was born on 5 May 1926 in the front room of the Stone Family farm outside of Marietta, SC. She attended school in Greenville, SC and Clearwater, FL, graduating from Clearwater High School in 1943. She attended UNC Greensboro and the University of South Carolina before marrying Elliott Padgett (Tuttie) Cleveland at Faith Memorial Chapel in Cedar Mountain in 1947, becoming the first couple to be married in the Chapel, which was founded by her grandfather, the Rev Alexander Mitchell.
She began her married life and started a family in Laurens, SC and in 1953 she and Tuttie built their Beechwood house on her corner of the Stone Family farm. Embracing life’s adventure, and supporting Tuttie’s textile engineering career, she moved with her five children and her mother to Tehran, Iran in 1958. After two years they returned to the States and lived in Marietta and then NC for several years. In 1962, now with six children, she returned to Beechwood, where the family expanded to a seventh child.
After the children finished school at Slater-Marietta and Travelers Rest, she and Tuttie returned to traveling the world. She brought smiles and laughter to her sons and daughter, making visits to California, Washington, Florida, Idaho, Mississippi, Wisconsin, Boston, New York, Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Okinawa, Australia, Singapore and Thailand.
Moving permanently to Cedar Mountain in 1994, she renovated the While-A-Way house on Stone’s Lake road and began to realize her gardening vocation, creating bounties of gorgeous plants and flowers. She lived for the time she could spend outdoors in the peace and quiet of God's creation where she tended her plants and paths over her five acres.
Kind, generous, forgiving, compassionate, considerate and most loving with her gentle and gracious manner, her smile was always bright, warm and welcoming, and she never met a stranger. Hers was an incredibly wonderful life, generously and unreservedly shared. We are broken hearted.
Ann was predeceased by her husband Tuttie and a grandson, Walter Rivers Chandler. She is blessed by all seven of her children, Padgett (Sue), Scott (Marcia), Ann Chandler (Walt), Rivers (Barb), Suzi Andracchi (Jim), Ben (Karen) and Peyre, and her sister Hallie Maxon (102) of Bellair, Florida, nineteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
