Born in Winston-Salem, NC on November 16, 1940, Charlene was the daughter of the late Georgia D. and Charles B. Holloway and older sister to Charles and Daniel Holloway of Atlanta. Charlene graduated from Northside High School, and Emory University where she was a member of Kappa Delta Epsilon sorority and graduated with a degree in Education.
Charlene was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greenville where she volunteered and loved helping new couples with their wedding celebrations. She served as former president of the Junior League, past board member of A Child’s Haven, The Speech, Hearing, and Learning Center, Inc, The Center for Continuing Education for Women, and was active in the Garden Club of Greenville, Christ Church Episcopal School, the Metropolitan Dance Club, and so many more of Greenville’s philanthropic organizations.
Charlene was the beloved wife of Braxton B. (“Bracky”) Comer who preceded her to heaven in 2004 and is survived by her three sons Bragg (wife Kathy), Blake (fiancé Amy), and Craig (wife Katie) and her nine grandchildren: Braxton, Blake, Walker, Lydia, Austin, Catie, Ada, Georgia, and Emily.
Charlene cherished her 52 years as a resident of Greenville and her lifelong friendships and close family relationships built during a beautiful, well-lived life which will be remembered for her passion for travel which took her across every continent, Fripp Island summers, family gatherings, and the Greenville organizations where she contributed so much over the years.
Her energy in recent years however, centered on her involvement with A Child’s Haven, and the young lives made better by their efforts. No doubt her early days as an elementary teacher set the stage for her undying love of children.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to: A Child’s Haven, 20 Martin Drive, Greenville, SC 29617.
A celebration of her life will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Greenville on Saturday, June 24. 2023 at 11:00 AM in the sanctuary, and the family will greet friends following the service from 12:00 to 1:30 in the church hall.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.mackeycenturydrive.com for the Comer family.
