Douglas Edward "Doug" Rushton, Sr. passed away surrounded by his family in New Orleans, Louisiana on Friday, September 27, 2019, at the age of 63. In February 2009, he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which he tirelessly fought for almost 11 years.
Doug was born in Greenville, South Carolina on November 4, 1955. He graduated from Easley High School where he was a member of the 1972 State Championship football team. He later attended Clemson University and worked as an insurance agent for Nationwide at the Rushton Insurance Agency in Easley until he retired. Doug loved watching his sons grow up, the Clemson Tigers, and sunsets from the porch on Lake Keowee.
He is survived by his sons Douglas (wife Carey) of New Orleans and Manning (wife Rebecca) of North Charleston. In addition he is survived by his father, H. Guilford "Gil" Rushton, Sr.; a brother, Dr. Harry Guilford "Gil" Rushton, Jr. (wife Denise) of McLean, VA; and a sister, Janet Rushton "Jan" Overton (husband, Benson) of Clemson. Doug was predeceased by his mother Edna Elizabeth Jenkinson "Betty" Rushton.
A visitation will be held Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 10:30 am followed by memorial service to celebrate Doug's life at 11 am with Rev. Dr. John Adams of Easley First Baptist Church officiating. Both events will take place at the Mackey Funeral Home, 311 Century Dr, Greenville, SC 29607.
