April 4, 1936 – April 11, 2020
Edith Balentine Redmond joined the church triumphant on Saturday, April 11, 2020 after a challenging fight with brain cancer, discovered in December.
The youngest child of Annie Lou Gibson (later Daniel) and William Louis Balentine, she was predeceased by her brother, Sgt. William Louis Balentine, Jr. USAAC, who died when the B-17 in which he was waist gunner was shot down in France in 1945; by her sister, Virginia Mae Balentine Martin; and by grandson, Hampton Clyde Gilbert.
Edith grew up on Augusta Road and at Mountain Lake Colony where she spent many hours in her pool and at the swimming lake. She graduated from Greenville High School, class of 1954, earning the Block G in basketball. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education at the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina where she was active in all sports. She taught physical education briefly in the Norfolk City Schools.
Immediately after graduation from WCUNC, she married James Webb Redmond, Jr. (Jim). Following a honeymoon at The Cloister, they moved to Norfolk for Jim’s active Navy duty.
Following the Navy, they lived in Charlotte, NC, Wilmington, NC, and Dunwoody, GA, all with his work at the telephone company.
They have three children, William Louis (Kim), James Webb, III, (Sara), and Marian Redmond Gilbert (Kevin), nine grandchildren (William L. Redmond, Jr. (Laura), Katherine Grace Redmond, Michael Balentine Redmond, James Russell Redmond (Jenny), Ryann Redmond, Riley Webb Redmond, Abigail Redmond Gilbert, Griffin Clyde Gilbert, and Parker Hampton Gilbert), and one great-granddaughter, Reese Mackenzie Redmond.
She and Jim lived in Dunwoody for 41 years, where she was active as a homemaker, mother, and church volunteer. More recently, the family enjoyed lake living in the Cliffs at Keowee Falls. She loved watching college sports on television (better coverage than in the stadium), especially Duke basketball and Clemson football.
For memorials, the family recommends a donation to “Cure SMA” https://www.curesma.org/ in memory of grandson Hampton Clyde Gilbert or to Buncombe Street UMC downtown campus https://www.buncombestreetumc.org/
A celebration of life service will be announced later.
