Floride Cothran Eschenberg, 97, passed away peacefully at her home in Greenville, SC, on February 20, 2025. She is the sole survivor of her immediate family, being predeceased by her parents, Alvin H. Cothran and Emma Lou Curry, her husband of 62 years, Dr. Horst H. Eschenberg, son, Christian H. Eschenberg, daughter, Caroline Eschenberg Brown, and brother, Alvin H. Cothran, Jr.
Floride was born in Greer in 1927 but the family moved to Greenville in 1941. She graduated from Greenville High School in 1944, and Furman University in 1948, majoring in Elementary Education. After graduation, she taught in Beaufort, SC, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Ft. Benning, GA before deciding to move to Germany to teach at a US military base. Moving to Germany changed her life since that's where she met Horst ... and the beginning of their true love story.
Floride and Horst were married in Greenville in 1956 and immediately moved to Lafayette, IN, where Horst completed his post-graduate studies at Purdue University. In 1959, they moved to Rockville, MD after Horst was hired as an Economist at The World Bank in Washington, DC. They continued to live in Maryland for 30 years before retiring to Greenville in 1989.
Floride was a loving mother and perfect partner to Horst, supporting all his endeavors. She was quite the hostess, entertaining many visiting foreign diplomats connected with The World Bank. They travelled quite extensively all over the world during their marriage.
Being a Christian all her life, Floride exemplified this always with her kindness and tender heart for everyone. She was a former member of the Greenville Women's Club and Greenville Garden Club.
A special thank you to her caregivers, Ingrid Headrick, Laura Cote, Sandie Corkery, Quawn Griffin, and Della Lattimore, and to her cousin, Harriet Willis Nash, who made sure she was well tended in her home until the very end.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Dr., Greenville, SC 29609 in the Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Floride with a memorial may send a contribution to Heartland Hospice, 421 SE Main Street, #100, Simpsonville, SC 29681, or to a charity of your choice.
