He was a devoted husband and father and was of Baptist faith. He was a dedicated member of Bible Baptist Church in New Buffalo, MI and also Faith Baptist Church in Taylors, SC.
Herbert was a WWII veteran, serving in both the Army and the Air Force.
In his retirement, Herbert took great joy in tackling home improvement projects. He was meticulous in his work, seeming to pour his heart and soul into every task, ensuring that every detail was perfect. Beyond home repairs, he discovered a new passion for art, spending many joyful hours painting by numbers. Each stroke was a reflection of his dedication, patience, and love for creation.
He is survived by his wife; Jean Hannah Bammann Gutschow, children; Barbara J. Roehl (Dwight), Karen L. Riddell (Robert), Julie K. Tillman (Jonathan), Douglas L. Gutschow (Tina) and Matthew J. Gutschow (Ashley). He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he is predeceased by four brothers and one sister.

Services for Herbert will be held Monday, January 27, 2025 at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM followed by the funeral at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
