Doug was one of the few police officers who was both professional and understanding. He was well loved by all who got to know him. I am deeply saddened by the news of his passing. Another great person gone.

What a wonderful man. I knew Doug from the beginning of my career in 1987. He taught me a lot about policing. We will sit and laugh about the old times one day Doug. This is just the beginning.

I worked with Doug at JC Penney's downtown, 
always a kind man.

Swafford took us snot-nose kids (rookies) and turned us into police officers. At first we feared him.. then we respected him.. and it didn't take long and we all loved him. Thank you for believing in us Doug. You made a difference!

I always enjoyed my time with  Doug  at the Federal Courthouse. A fine gentleman!

Doug was the epitome of an old fashioned , gritty,hard working officer who was an even better man. They don't make them like that anymore.

Doug was a wonderful, upstanding gentleman.  I was proud he was my uncle.  You're home with Granny, Grandaddy and Ken now.

To the Swofford Family, I was very sad to hear of Doug's passing. When I begin my police career, I learned a lot listening to him and watching the way he policed. He was one of those officers we all liked anad respected. he will be missed.

I just learned of Doug's passing. I am so sorry to learn this news. Doug was a great police officer that I truly admired.

We've lost a wonderful man who left many people with memories that will make them smile. Thank you Doug for sharing your Woodside childhood memories that included my dad and his family and thank you for your guidance as a police officer. You will be missed.

I always saw Doug as patient and kind.  Although he was soft spoken, his words made great impact.....and he didn't yell at me when I wrecked his car.  I am praying for peace for you and your family In your loss Mary.

My growing up friend, my neighbor, my police beat officer friend. I still think of the evenings sitting on my porch with the dogs and talking about our mill hill days, PHS and CSO days. Know that you are missed.

I am so sorry for your loss. As you know Doug and I were partners for many years. He taught me so much. Doug was always there for me and many officers. He will be truly missed by many. My heart is sadden today but I look forward to seeing Doug again in a better place

Doug was a wonderful man and an outstanding police officer.  He helped shape me and many others into becoming the officers that we are.  And always made me smile even through tough days.  I'll miss you Doug and will always be grateful that I had the pleasure of knowing you.

Doug always made my day special when he would stop by my office to pass the time of day or just to ask how I was doing. A good friend and law enforcement officer.
