Kathryn Winifred Armstrong, 88, of Greenville, wife of the late John William Armstrong, passed away on Tuesday, April 26th, 2016. She was also known as “Kay” or “Tinka” by her friends and family. Kay was born in Lawson, Saskatchewan, Canada to Ernest James Stevenson and Winifred Mary Ellerton Stevenson. When she was born, the delivery nurse was reading Babbitt and nicknamed Kay after the young character Tinka in the novel. Kay graduated from the Qu’Appelle Diocesan Boarding School in Regina, Saskatchewan, where she was Head Girl. She received her degree as a registered nurse in 1949. Kay married John W. Armstrong in 1950, and she and Jack moved to California in 1952. Kay worked for many years at Lanterman State Hospital in Pomona, California and resided in Pomona and La Verne, California. Kay loved books and learning, and she inspired and supported her three children to graduate from college. At the age of 54 Kay herself received a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science from Chapman University in California. She is survived by three sons, John Stevenson Armstrong of Greenville, Bruce Irving Armstrong of Pomona, California, and Winston James Armstrong of San Diego, along with six grandchildren, Carlie, Nicholas, Evan, Ashley, Samuel, and Jacqueline. Services will be private.
