
Born on January 28, 1931, in Ware Shoals, South Carolina, he was the son of Roy and Mary Smith. He was a 1949 graduate of Ware Shoals High School. During his public school career, he was active in both athletic and academic activities, earning ten letters. He was awarded the Lions Club Athletic Medal in 1949. He also was the catcher for the Greenwood American Legion baseball team that won the South Carolina state title as well as the regional championship. He became an excellent lifelong golfer and served as both vice-president and president of the Senior Golfers of South Carolina.
He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1954 as a Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, spending four years of active duty and earning the rank of Captain. Once in civilian life, he went into the textile industry where he spent forty years. During these years, Lamar made many memories, many of which involved his membership in the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC). He was chair, vice-chair, and secretary of the Palmetto Section and National Representative for three years.
Lamar is survived by his sister Nancy Yokel, daughter Debbie (Chuck) Mitchell; son Randy (Joanne); five grandchildren; Caroline (Timothy) Redd, Catherine (Kevin) Lucas, Graham (Janelle) Mitchell, Matthew (Harleigh) Smith, and Avery Mitchell; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Barbara and his sister Gail Cobb.
The family would like to thank the kind and loving caregivers at McCall Hospice House. He will be greatly missed by his family, his neighbors, and his friends at HealThy Self at St. Francis Millennium where he exercised faithfully.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, March 24, at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
