He was born in Central, SC as the son of the late Jay Green and Ida Mae Perkins Green. He is the last surviving member of his family. He was predeceased by his 8 siblings; three brothers and five sisters. Mr. Green was the proud husband for 70 years of his beloved wife, the late Ella Mae Marchbanks Green. He was also predeceased by his beloved daughter, Janie Green and grandson, Lloyd Green III, and a great granddaughter, Anne Catherine Kinerney.
He was drafted into the Army in November of 1941. He completed his training in Ft. Jackson and sailed on the Queen Mary to Scotland in May of 1942. He completed more training in England and was in Algeria and assigned to the Automatic Weapons Unit. He was one of our unique Veterans who served and survived in Germany in the Battle of the Buldge at Bastogne and Normandy on the D-Day Invasion. Even though he never wanted to discuss his service or bravery while serving in the military, his awards and medals were just discovered within the last few years and acknowledged during his 100th birthday celebration in 2020. He was awarded the Army good conduct medal, Army Defense medal, Army Campaign medal, Europe/African Middle East Campaign medals, Five (5) Bronze Stars and One Silver Star, Legion of Honor from France that had never been awarded to a non-French soldier except to Mr. Green and his Unit. This was equal to our Congressional Medal of Honor.
L.S. Green started his plumbing business, “L.S. Green Plumbing” in Mauldin, with one truck in 1955 until 2006! He served his customers with knowledge, kindness and integrity throughout the years and grew the business to 35 trucks and 75 employees before the business was sold in 2006. He never actually “retired” from helping people with plumbing needs and was still seen driving his “plumbing truck” around Mauldin until he was at least 90 years old!
Mr. Green was a respected servant of the City of Mauldin for many years. He served as the Mayor of Mauldin; in fact, he was the only Mayor to serve three consecutive terms from 1992-2003. Mr. Green was responsible for the coordination of the first-ever “Friendship Baseball Games” from Russia to come to Mauldin to play and for our Mauldin Dixie Youth Team to go to Siberia to play! The present City Hall of Mauldin was built and occupied during his term as Mayor. He continued to attend City meetings as a concerned citizen even many years after his official serving had ended. “Mayor Green” is still highly respected name around the City of Mauldin and attended ever City Event!
He is survived by his three children; Betty Mitchell (John); Sam Green, Jr. (Margaret who is deceased); Sara Green and his special friend, Doris Dalton. He was the proud grandfather of 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren. They describe him as honest, dedicated, hard-working, man of God, dedicated to his Country and always taught his family without a lot of words, he always taught by “example!”
Mr. Green was an active member of Mauldin United Methodist Church for over 60 years and still attended regularly! He loved his church and did everything he could to serve and support the ministries there.
