Margaret Petrakos peacefully fell asleep in the Lord on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, holding the hands of her beloved sons, Steve and Nick Petrakos. She was at home, surrounded by her loving family, friends and caregivers when her soul ascended into the bosom of Abraham.
She was born in Brooklyn, NY to the late George and Loretta Colovos. She moved to Raleigh, NC at the age of ten and attended Meredith College, where she met her late husband, George Steve Petrakos. They later moved to Greenville, SC. After losing her husband in 1968, Margaret dedicated her life to raising her two sons. She worked at Meyers Arnold, Rich’s, and Macy’s for 35 years.
A most vibrant and colorful personality, Margaret endeared herself to all who met her; she loved people. Her beautiful smile and charm made certain no one felt like a stranger in her presence. She was known for her warm hospitality and incredible sense of humor. She enjoyed music and found pleasure in working in the yard.
Margaret and her loved ones were among the pioneer families of the Saint George Parish, being involved in and committed to growing our parish into what we are blessed to have today. Her involvement in our parish philanthropic groups gave us a foundation upon which to build. Being one of the “greatest generation,” she demonstrated the genuine love she had for our Lord and her fellow man.
Margaret is survived by her two sons, Steve Petrakos (Lisa) and Nick Petrakos; grandchildren, Stephen Stambaugh (Caelin), Jordan Stambaugh, and Haley Stambaugh Edmonds (Chandler); and great granddaughter, Emery Stambaugh.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Greenville, SC from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM with a Trisagion service at 10:30 AM. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church Cathedral, 406 N Academy St, Greenville, SC 29601.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.mackeywoodlawn.com for the Petrakos family.
