Greenville, SC
Mary Allane Hartness, 75, of Greensboro, NC, loving wife of Ronald L. Hartness, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, October 16, 2020.
Born in Denver, Colorado, she was the daughter of the late Robert Craig Hirst and Mary Emily Thompson Colling. After high school, Allane worked for the City of Denver as a key punch operator, when computers were still as big as a house and didn’t fit in your pocket. In 1966, Allane met the love of her life, Ron, at a birthday party, where he said she had the most beautiful blue eyes in the world. After a short courtship they were married, and they hadn’t been apart since. Through all of the challenges young couples are faced with, Allane was able to steer the family ship through financial tides managing the day-to-day household finances, becoming a master couponer, and helping put their two daughters through college.
She was an adventurous cook, with many successes and some disappointments (lintel tacos…enough said) and a passionate gardener who took great pleasure in growing things big and small in her flower and vegetable gardens; quickly learning that there is in fact a right way to plant asparagus so it grows up and not into the ground. Allane loved working with her hands and was a talented wood worker, ceramicist, and crafter and would have gladly done many more projects if she had more free time.
Allane was also a catalyst for family traditions; one of the fondest memories of her nieces and nephews was how she made a birthday cake for Jesus each year at Christmas.
Allane’s life was one of service. She was a God-fearing woman that rejoiced in the teachings of the Lord and followed his example in the love, kindness, and devotion she showed to her family, friends, and neighbors. She attended Garden Home Church and Grace Community Assembly of God in Denver, CO where she was an active member of the church and grew many lifelong friendships. She loved traveling to the Rocky Mountains each year and having breakfast with her church family.
Most recently Allane was a resident of The Gables on Pelham in Greenville, SC as she battled the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease. Though pleasantly confused, she never lost her love of music and dancing, visiting with her family, stealing a french fry off of someone else’s plate or indulging in chocolate bar treats provided by her eternally devoted husband when they visited together. In addition to her loving husband of 53 years Allane is survived by her two daughters, Christine M. Hartness of Colorado and Paula B. Hartness of New York; four siblings, Bill Colling, Barbara Niemi, Kevin McGarry, and Linda Kelly; and her four nieces and nephews, David Colling, Allison Kersgard, Madeline Kelly, and Joseph Kelly.
The family will hold a memorial service in Colorado at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (https://www.alz.org) or church of your choice.
