Born on January 6, 1930, to Vena Adams Eppes and James Frank Eppes, she was the youngest of six children. The oldest nephew of her nine nieces and nephews could not say Mary Ann, and so she became known as “Meon” to her family and all who were close to her.
Mary Ann graduated Parker High School in 1947 as part of the last eleven-year cohort and was a proud member of the ‘47 Gang for her whole life. Mary Ann then studied physical education at Winthrop University, where she graduated in 1951. As a consummate educator and life-long learner, she returned to school to get her Masters in Early Childhood Education from Clemson University.
She taught across the upstate for 33 years, though she had a special place in her heart for her time at Travelers Rest Elementary. Mary Ann also tended to the nursery at Greenville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church for another 20 years.
Mary Ann always said she stayed busy to keep out of trouble. True to that sentiment, she kept active in the community her whole life, from lifeguarding across Greenville to volunteering her time to the Greenville Women’s Club and the Democratic Party. Her passion for teaching led her to teach exercise classes for seniors at St. Mark United Methodist Church. Always a generous soul, she was also a proud blood donor and supported Meals on Wheels.
Mary Ann is survived by her son, Robert, daughter-in-law Betsy, and two grandchildren, Caitlin and Riley. The last to arrive of all her siblings, she’s now the last to depart and join them. She was the glue that held the family together, and she will be deeply missed.
In honor of Mary Ann’s lifelong philanthropy, the family requests that memorials are sent to Meals on Wheels Greenville in lieu of flowers.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 15, 2025 at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial park. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, with a memorial service to follow in the chapel at 2:00 PM.
