

Michael James Slattery, 49, entered Heaven on October 29, 2013 at 6:48 pm after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born on April 24, 1964 in Louisville, Kentucky, along with his twin brother, to Charles Robert and Dorothy Rivett (deceased). He is survived by his wife, Lynda Masters Slattery, 48 and three children. Also surviving are his father, Charles Slattery of Dunedin, FL, two brothers, Ron Slattery of Palm Harbor, FL and Dennis Slattery of Tampa, FL and a sister, Sharyn Dietrich of Sellersberg, IN and numerous nephews and nieces and cousins and in-laws. Mike accepted Jesus Christ as His Saviour at the age of twelve. He and his twin brother Dennis came to Bob Jones University of Greenville, SC to begin their college education. Mike had begun his artistic training in his early teen years in the studio of photo-realist artist Mary Louise Schrodt. While at BJU he continued his studies under Carl R. Blair and Emery Bopp and graduated in 1988 with an M.A. degree in studio art. He then joined the art division faculty at BJU, teaching for nearly 25 years and heading the studio art department in the recent years. While teaching, he also participated in and won awards in many juried art shows, including several best of show in exhibitions such as the Anderson Arts Center Annual Show, Artists of the Upstate Juried Show at Greenville's Artisphere and SC Festival of Flowers in Greenwood. Michael's work has been published in New American Paintings by the Open Studios Press, the International Drawing Annual by Manifest Gallery and in Drawing Inspiration, a drawing textbook by Delmar-Cengage Learning. He was also a member of several associations including Upstate Visual Arts, the Metropolitan Arts Council, the Spartanburg Artist Guild, the SC Watercolor Society, and the Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Engravers Society of Washington, DC. Mike also enjoyed collecting Superhero, GI Joe, and Star Trek memorabilia and spending time with his family. Visitation will held Sunday, November 3, 2013 at Woodlawn Funeral Home from 1:30 – 4:30 pm. Funeral service will be held at Faith Baptist Church, 500 West Lee Road, Taylors, SC on Monday, November 4, 2013 at 11:00 am with Pastor Monroe officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland East Memorial Park, 2206 Woodruff Road, Simpsonville, SC 29681 The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the nursing staff at the Barge Hospital for their care of Mike in his final days.
