Born on November 2, 1942 in Pickens, South Carolina, he was the son of the late John and Lula Roper.
Robert's early education was in Pickens County at D.W. Daniel High School, after which he attended Clemson University. He pursued a degree in Electrical Engineering; however, he left early to begin his career. He had the opportunity to learn from his father while they were both working at Davis Electrical, working on their southern job sites. Robert and his father went on to open Roper Electric Constructors, and after his father’s death, Robert began Roperscapes, a hardscape and paving design business.
Robert was an enthusiastic fisherman, and a devoted owner of many breeds of dogs. Most recently, his German Shepherds, Wolf, Kaiser, and Sue, were his constant companions. He was also a serious Clemson Football fan and enjoyed spending quality time with old friends.
One of Robert’s greatest achievements was overcoming a battle with addiction. He turned his life around, with God’s help, and was able to move forward and live a fulfilling and joyful life.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his son, Robert D. Roper II, in 2014.
He is survived by his sister, Judy Roper Olson and her husband, Chris, his nephew and niece, Clay and Cara, and son Bob's mother, Donna Hatcher Roper. Robert's generous, lovable, and kind personality made him a cherished member of his family and close friends.
A graveside service for Robert will be held on Monday, February 23, 2026 at 3:00 PM at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to “Bob's Friends Account” at Triune Mercy Center, 222 Rutherford Street, Greenville, SC 29609, in memory of Robert. For Robert, the loss of his son, Bob, marked and changed his life. A legacy of generosity and kindness will continue to influence and inspire even in his absence.
Robert was blessed with wonderful caregivers in his last years. Special thanks from his family to the staff at Interim Hospice for all they did during his final weeks.
