Stephen “Steve” Crane Brockway, referred to by friends and co-workers as “Bossman”, passed away on Monday, September 6, 2021. He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Karen Brockway; his mother, Dean Brockway; and his sister, Rhonda Brockway.
He was predeceased by his father, Francis R. Brockway; and his brother, David Brockway.
Steve grew up in Greenville, SC and graduated from Eastside High School, where he was a member of the 1977 state championship football team. In 1978 he set the state record for shot put, which stood for over 40 years. He also attended Brevard Junior College where he was a Wildlands Fire Fighter.
Beginning at age 17, Steve volunteered at the Wade Hampton Fire Department, becoming a full time member in 1986. In 1992 he began volunteering at Piedmont Park Fire Department, then won election as a Commissioner of the Piedmont Park Fire Department, serving 18 years in that capacity. He also gave 17 years as a SC Fire Academy Instructor, and 40 years as a fire fighter of the Wade Hampton Fire Department. Even after retiring he still volunteered whenever he was needed.
Steve was also a valued volunteer at Eastside High School. He spent some years as a C-Team football coach. And he was always on hand to fix anything that broke, needed repairs or upgrades.
When he wasn’t at the station or Eastside or fixing things for friends, Steve enjoyed being in the outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, riding horses, scuba diving, and working with wood.
The family will receive friends on Monday, September 13, 2021 from 10:00 am until 11:45 am at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at 311 Century Drive, Greenville, SC 29607. Funeral services will begin at 12:00 pm in the Mackey Chapel. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park at 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609.
