

Due to her father’s Naval career, Terry spent her childhood going back and forth between coasts. She graduated Valedictorian at Coronado High School in Coronado, California, and Phi Beta Kappa with a BA in English from Cornell University. At Cornell, she was a member and president of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She received her MA from Northwestern University. She was married to the late Dr. Ernest J. Walters, Jr., and is survived by her daughter, Amy Walters.
Terry and Jay moved from Chicago to Greenville in 1962, where Jay was a Professor of Political Science at Furman University. Terry taught as an Adjunct Professor in the English Department from 1973-1974. Terry then worked for over 20 years in the Furman Publications Department, where she was editor of Furman Reports and retired as Publications Director in 1996.
Terry was active in the community, serving as President of the Greenville branch of AA UW and the Thursday Club. She also served on the board of the International Chamber Music Series and coordinated the Wednesday Club for many years after Jay’s death in 1997. She was a member of Christ Church Episcopal.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, September 26 at 11 am in the Furman University Chapel. Visitation will follow the service in the Garden Room below the Chapel. Inurnment will be at Springwood Cemetery at 2 pm.
