Willie Mae Wright Smith

Willie “Mae” Wright Smith passed away August 6, 2011 at home at age 83 surrounded by loved ones. She had been living in Asheville, NC with her eldest daughter Peggy and her husband Klaus Hinnenkamp for the past eight years. She loved going to her great granddaughters’ softball games and was considered a part of their team as she sat with her pink straw hat on. She enjoyed all of her grandchildren’s’ activities and went to their ballgames and recitals as often as she could. She was known as “Grandma Mae” to all who knew her.

She was born on September 4, 1927 and grew up in Clifton, SC. Then she traveled with her husband in the US Air Force for 20 years, living in many states and England for three years. They retired in 1965.

Preceding her in death was her husband of 58 years, Ward C. Smith who died in June 2000. She was also predeceased by a great grandson.

Survivors also include daughters, Dorothy and husband Al Lalla of Southington, Connecticut and Norma Blanton of Powdersville, SC as well as seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday, August 8, 2011 from 2-3 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC with funeral services to follow at 3:00pm in the Chapel. Interment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
