Goldie Jewell Callaway

Goldie Jewel Callaway passed away Sunday, 22 September 2013 at the Methodist Nursing Home in Ft. Smith, AR. Jewel was born 7 October 1916 near Horatio, AR to James and Grace (Mayberry) Johnson. She had five brothers, two of which died in infancy. During World War II, she worked at the Lone Star munitions plant as a supervisor and quality assurance inspector. After the war, she again worked as a beautician and as a waitress. She was adept at quilting, needlework, and crochet; and would share her beautiful creations with friends and family. True to her farm upbringing, Jewel loved to garden and couldn't wait to “dig in the dirt” each spring. Jewel was a child of the Great Depression and developed into an avid collector of Depression era glassware and china, which she turned into a sideline business in her retirement at the flea markets in Ashdown, AR. However, it was her loving heart and generous nature for which she will be remembered by her friends and family. Jewel was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Edward Callaway, and her brother Calvin Lee Johnson. She is survived by her two brothers, Cecil Johnson of Baytown, TX and Bob Johnson of Haslett, TX; two children, Tommi Cherry of Ft. Smith, AR and Scott Callaway of Virginia Beach, VA; five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild. Cremation is under the direction McConnell Funeral Home. Private burial of the ashes at Clear Creek Cemetery in Horatio, AR will occur on Saturday for family and friends.
