God called Virgie Lucille Newton home on Saturday, February 19, 2022. We were blessed to have her for 90 years. Lucille was born in Lonoke, Arkansas to Joe and Goldie DeViney. At 17, she moved to Fort Smith working as a nanny for Dr. Ware while finishing high school. Later she became fountain manager at Walgreens. She is preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Newton and her brothers J.T. and Joe DeViney.
Lucille was a kind and generous, no nonsense lady. She was our superhero. She raised three children, was a great cook, baker, gardener, seamstress, quilter and more. She was a Sunday School teacher at Rye Hill and Trinity in Pocola and was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Hackett. She became a cattle farmer when her husband bought a farm in 1967. She could run the tractors and cows with the best of them. She loved to crochet, read and listen to southern gospel music.
She is survived by two daughters, Donna Newton of the home and Pam Coles of Oklahoma City; one son, James (JerriJune) Newton of St. James, Missouri; one granddaughter, Amber (Matthew) Newkirk of California; one grandson, Joshua Newton of Kansas; a great grandchild, Liam Newkirk of California and a sister, Venita Ragsdale of Cabot, Arkansas.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Friday, February 25 at McConnell Funeral Home in Greenwood. Visitation and viewing will be prior to service Friday from 8-10 a.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 11300 N. Rodney Parham Rd., Suite 205A, Little Rock, AR 72212 or any breast cancer foundation.
The family would like to thank the nurses of Kindred Spirt Home Health and Heart of Hospice for their care.
