Fred was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. He was the youngest of four children born to Ludwig and Wilhelmina (Billie) Stanwood, and was raised with three siblings Judy, Linda and Tom. Fred attended Russelville Grade School where he enjoyed track and football. He graduated from David Douglas High School where he worked at Fryer Tucks Chicken and took advantage of the "perks" of being an assistant manager. Wood Shop and Auto Mechanics were his passion and later turned into some of his favorite hobbies. Fred was gifted with his hands and enjoyed working on projects around the family home and rebuilding different classic cars they owned throughout the years. He was a jack of all trades!
Growing up, he loved camping, fishing and building houses with his dad at McCalls Ranch in Halfway, OR. He even worked with his Father-in-Law for a few years at Pierce Northwest Floors, where he learned the art of hard labor and craftsmanship before he transitioned into a successful career in the filter and hydraulic hose industry at Oil Filter Service Company. After 15 years alongside his colleague, Dave, they bought the business, which they had just sold at the beginning of this year. He was transitioning into retirement after 35 LONG years of ownership and 50 years with the company.
Fred met the love of his life Patty in their high school English class. They got married on August 24, 1973, and were always seen walking hand in hand, and side by side. Together they raised two children, daughter Miranda (nick-named "Blondie") and son Matthew (nick-named "Shithead"). Together they enjoyed many family vacations at Walt Disney World and summers on the Oregon Coast. Fred also loved traveling to many countries such as Scandanavia, Europe, The Mediterranean, England, and Switzerland to name a few. He also enjoyed going on cruises, cooking, golfing, fishing, spending time with his grandkids, and weekend liquor runs to Reno with their best friends. Through his travels he also gained a deep appreciation for old European castles, church and museum architecture.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Ludwig and Wilhelmina. He is survived by his wife, Patty; children, Miranda (Chuck) and Matthew (Marjorie); grandchildren, Dominic, Daniella, Samantha and Alexandra. His presence and love for sweets, roller coasters, collection of Disney watches, and of course, Beaver football and The Portland Trail Blazers will be deeply missed.
A viewing will be held Monday, June 7th at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home from 4-8pm. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 8th at East Hill Foursquare Church at 12:30pm. Fred will be laid to rest at Lincoln Memorial Park and Funeral Home.
