Hiram Richard Crane

Hiram “Bub” Richard Crane of Gresham Oregon passed away Sunday October 16, 2016. Bub was born January 13, 1933 in Garibaldi, Oregon to Hiram and Amanda (Odell) Crane. He attended Gresham High School where he excelled in many sports. Later he went on to Clark College and then graduated from Linfield College. Sports remained a big part of his life while in college, playing basketball and throwing the javelin on the track team. His love of athletics influenced his career choice of teaching and coaching. Bub taught and coached at Ashland High School in Southern Oregon, Roosevelt High School in Portland and then retired from Centennial High School in Gresham where he had spent the majority of his career. He felt very fortunate to be able to continue relationships with many former students and athletes during his retirement years and still referred to them as “his kids”. Family was the most valued part in Bub’s life, and he especially enjoyed gathering to celebrate family birthdays and holidays. His friendships at Cascade Athletic Club and those in his neighborhood were very important to him. Wherever he was he loved to engage in conversations about politics, current events and college sports, usually the Oregon Ducks. Bub stayed active throughout his life by playing golf, working out at Cascade, riding his bike and volunteer coaching. As his children and grandchildren grew up, he could always be found on the sidelines at their sporting events and never missed a chance for a “coaching moment” or words of encouragement. He is survived by Marlene, his wife of 63 years; his children, Karen (John) Engdahl, Steve Crane (Brianne McCleary); his grandchildren, Bryan (Heidi) Engdahl, Laura (Chris) Bence; his great-grandson, Cole Bence; and his siblings, Virginia Lund, Shirley (Carl) Hackerott, and Mike (Diane) Crane. A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, November 13, 2016, in the Centennial High School auditorium at 1:00pm.
