Jack McKay June 9, 1925 – July 8, 2025
Jack Paul McKay lived to be 100 years old, a century marked with lasting impressions and an amazing legacy. Those who were lucky enough to know Jack know that he never turned anyone away who showed up at his door, he worked hard and helped everyone he could. He had inside jokes and nicknames for everyone and countless old-fashioned sayings that his family could repeat after hearing just the first word.
He was born in Vancouver, Washington on June 9, 1925 to John and Roberta “Cora” McKay. At 18 years old he became a Marine serving in World War II and trained at Camp Pendleton and in Hawaii. He was involved in the invasions of Saipan, Tinian, Ryukyu, Okinawa, Nagasaki and Kyushu, he came home a hero and soon met the love of his life Betty. After returning from war, he graduated from Gresham High School and married Betty on September 26, 1947. They built a family together, raised four children, and were married for 68 years. His home was never quiet, it was a place the family gathered for holidays and to live when the need arose. He built houses, farmed, raised cattle, hunted with his sons, and relentlessly teased and spoiled his grandchildren or any child that came to his home.
Jack retired from a long successful career at the telephone company meeting lifelong friends that kept in touch with him until the end. Jack enjoyed being outside and working in his yard which he maintained well into his 90s and taking care of his beloved dog Ollie. In the evenings you would find him on the couch with a bowl of popcorn watching wrestling “the fights” while Betty sat beside him reading a book and after she passed Ollie became his companion. He was a part of the McDonald’s social club, a group of retirees that met every morning at the Gresham McDonalds for coffee over the last 40 years. They celebrated birthdays together, rode the bus to the casino and met for lunch regularly at Heidi’s.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife Betty; his sister Margaret; his brother Tom; daughter Betsy; and grandsons Scotty and Charlie. He is survived by his brother Lee; children, Mike (Ellen), Russ (Jackie) and Bill (Xieu); grandchildren: Stefanie, Michael (Julie), Shannon, Jon (Brittne), Dan, Chris (Elaynea), Duy (Tien), Jason (Ashley), Tammy (Aaron), Darlene, Angela (Mike), Wil and great grandchildren: Mathew, Zachary, Piper, Paisley, Cora, Charlie, Zane, Jaedyn, Perrin, Summer, Hayden, Hunter, Carson, Lane, Kellen, Tori, Leia, Maddox and Frankie.
