May 20, 1935 – December 2, 2021
Our loving father Larry passed away peacefully after his bout with Parkinson’s disease on December 2, 2021 with his wife Jo Ann of Lake Oswego at his side.
A lifelong Oregonian, Larry was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol (Yung), in 1992 and his sister, Sharon Markham, in 1969. He is survived by his sons Joel (Linda), of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Steven (Melissa), of Boring, Oregon; Erik (Kelli), of Vancouver, Washington; and his daughter Amy (Gary North) of Bend, Oregon, and his stepdaughters Kirsten Stirewalt of Portland, Oregon and Lori Homer of Vancouver, Washington; grandchildren Eric, Kevin, Jordan, Brittny, Ian, Lydia, Samantha, Alexandra, Keegan, and Aidan; and four great-grandchildren.
A man of good humor, he was a loving father, analytical, thoughtful and considerate, and a fine human being. He cared deeply for his loved ones, including Carol and Jo Ann, his children and their offspring, and his extended family and friends. Gifted with intelligence, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to know the origin of most every word in the dictionary, he lovingly challenged his children intellectually. Family dinners would often include math games and vocabulary contests. Because of this, his children learned the love of science and the gift of the written word.
He attended Sandy Union High School in Sandy, Oregon, graduating in 1952, attended the University of Portland, and graduated from Oregon State University in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his time at O.S.U. he was a member of its ski team and received a varsity letter. In 1957 he attended the U.S. Army’s Officer’s Training School and worked locally as “critical personnel” in engineering and spent eight years in the Army Reserves.
From 1956 to 1961 he was employed as a Project Mechanical Engineer at J. Donald Kroeker & Associates in Portland, where he provided schematical design for commercial, public, and industrial building projects, including the design of the heating and cooling systems for Portland’s Memorial Coliseum.
In 1959, Larry married Carol and they made their home in Portland, Oregon. They were married 33 years until Carol’s passing.
From 1961 until his retirement in 1986, Larry worked for Tektronix in Beaverton, Oregon in a succession of engineering and management positions, including Mechanical Engineer, Architectural and Engineering Manager, Energy and Environmental Engineer and Facilities Manager. There he managed the Corporate Energy Management program, resulting in the Governor’s Award for energy conservation.
In 1987 he began work as a Senior Environmental Engineer for the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality in Portland, where he was responsible for the development of a new statewide environmental program to reduce the environmental impact of leaking underground tanks. Additionally, he spent several months in Juneau, Alaska assisting with the interpretation of federal environmental regulations for the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. He retired from the Oregon DEQ in 1996.
In addition to his work, Larry served as the Director of the Unified Sewerage Agency in Washington County, Oregon and was a member and Chairman of the Washington County (Oregon) Fire District #1 Fire Board of Appeals. He was also an active patron of Mt. Hood Community College and created the Carol Yung Frost Scholarship Fund in memory of his late wife, Carol.
Larry married JoAnn in 1997 and resided in Lake Oswego their entire marriage. They were married 24 years.
He spent a good deal of his post-retirement years enjoying life at his home in Lake Oswego and traveling the world with his wife and children to Australia, Europe, Canada, Mexico and Japan. Larry was a gifted amateur photographer and enjoyed playing golf at every opportunity. He was a member of a men’s club and played golf with Jo Ann until he retired his clubs. He was active at his church, Lake Grove Presbyterian, as a greeter and with Jo Ann was involved in numerous social activities.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Larry at the Frost family homestead in Boring, Oregon on December 18th, 2021 at 2 PM. (16525 SE Tickle Creek Road, Boring, OR, 97009.)
Please RSVP by Wednesday, December 15th to [email protected].
In lieu of flowers, his children request that a donation be made to a charity of your choice.
