Marie graduated from Gresham High School and then the University of Oregon, earning a degree in Art Education and enjoying membership in Alpha Omicron Pi. She met her husband, Skip Squires, in their last term of college. They married in 1958, and began a life that took them to homes in Boston, Springfield, Portland, Gresham and Perth, Western Australia.
Marie was devoted to her family- it was what she was most proud of. She volunteered with PTAʼs, as a Bluebird leader, organizing events, and buying items from her grandchildrenʼs fundraisers. She attended games, recitals, and performances of her children and grandchildren, too numerous to count.
She worked for years in the tutor center at Gresham High School, and was a member of the American Association of University Women for over 40 years, making life long friends in both places. Marie was a long time volunteer for Snow Cap, the Gresham Historical Society, and the Gresham Art Committee. She was a member of Smith Memorial Presbyterian, serving as a deacon, elder and choir member.
Marie was an adventurer- joining a womenʼs soccer team in her forties, hiking mountains in Switzerland and rafting in her fifties and sixties, and going on rides in Disneyland and down water slides in her seventies. She traveled across Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
Known as Marie, Mom and Gramme, she was a fan of Masterpiece Theater, Dancing with the Stars, and The Bachelor. She loved to attend plays, musicals, the symphony, and got to see both Neil Diamond and Tom Jones in concert. Pride and Prejudice was her favorite book, and she loved to read about the queens and kings of England. She could always be counted on to watch “The Sound of Music” or “The Goofy Movie.”
Marie is survived by a loving family including children Teresa (Alan), Angela (Brad) and Andy (Lisa); her adoring grandchildren Ellen, Mary, Lilli, Lily and Charlie; siblings Carole (Gerhard) and Ed (Jacquie); siblings by marriage Patricia Granquist and Mike Squires; and her numerous devoted cousins, nieces and nephews. Marie was predeceased by her parents and by her husband, Skip. Even without her soulmate, Marie continued her travels, had fun, and demonstrated love, courage, kindness and commitment every day.
Marie is also survived by the dearest of friends from her Red Hats, Bridge and Craft groups, from AAUW, Gresham High School and the church.
Services are Saturday, February 25th, 1:00 at Smith Memorial Presbyterian in Fairview. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Smith Memorial.
