

Richard enlisted in the United States Navy and he served as a Baker aboard several ships, and he retired from the Navy 20 years later.
Following his retirement from the Navy, Richard worked as a cook for a Christian College and a nursing home. He then started a landscaping business, and he had many loyal customers. He worked until age 80, when he officially retired.
Richard and his first wife, Maxine, were married for 58 years and enjoyed being snowbirds for many years. They spent summers in Oregon, and winters in Arizona. While in Arizona, Richard and Maxine attended Quartside Baptist Church, where Richard served as a Deacon and was involved in the Food Pantry Ministry. Richard also started a HAM Radio Ministry with another member of Quartside Baptist Church. During the summers that were spent in Oregon, Richard attended Glisan Street Baptist Church in Portland, where he also served as a Deacon. Richard enjoyed visiting the Oregon Coast, and he would visit the Baptist Church in Lincoln City when he was on the Coast. Richard was passionate about supporting churches, and he often made donations to churches that he had a connection to. Maxine passed in 2008
In 2009, Richard married his second wife, Virginia Learned Smith. They were married until his recent passing. They also had the opportunity to enjoy “snow birding” together in Arizona. They attended Glisan Street Baptist Church together for 9 years, until they moved to Washington.
Richard was a family man, and his children and grandchildren brought him a great deal of joy in life, and he enjoyed attending family reunions and birthday parties. He also enjoyed camping at his campsite near Salem in his pickup camper.
Richard was preceded in death by Maxine Warner. His siblings Francis, Albert, Vernon, Minnie, Nathan, George, Claude, Clifford and Don also preceded him. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Learned Smith. His children (Phyllis Warner Ross, Melvin Curtis Warner and Cheryl Warner Drummond) also survive him. Richard had 12 grandchildren, 1 great great grandson and 1 great great grandaughter
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at 11:30 am at Glisan Street Baptist Church in Portland. A Committal Service with Military Honors will be held following the Memorial Service at 2:00 pm at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Memorial Contributions can be made to Glisan Street Baptist Church or Community Home Health Hospice in Vancouver.
