As an only child of Wyona and Bryan Tykeson, she was born June 22nd, 1930 in Portland, Oregon. She grew up on a dairy farm in Tualatin before leaving home to attend nursing school. She graduated U of O medical school department of nursing (OHSU) in 1951 and began her nursing career at OHSU. Following retirement after many years in a supervisor position she maintained many long time friendships through luncheons of retired nurses who call themselves the “Golden Girls”.
Tyke married Joseph Kelly in 1952 and settled in Portland to raise their family. They were blessed with five children: Mike (Alice), Pat, Gale (Andy), Casey (Lori), Annie (Bill), 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Tyke was always up for new adventures: “just give me 5 minutes and I’ll have my bags packed”. She enjoyed traveling, trips including Mexico, China and Europe. Her favorite was Poipu Beach on Kauai where she and Joe spent many vacations. She also took pleasure in golfing every Tuesday with her ladies group, gardening, and the companionship of many dogs through the years.
Family was always important to mom. She was always the best listener who never offered unsolicited advice. She never judged and accepted everyone as they were. Her children will remember her infectious laugh, how she always greeted them with a hug and sweet smile. Forever in our hearts she will be missed dearly!
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held 1:00 pm, Sunday, August 12th at Bill and Annie Bateman's home, 850 SE Ironwood Place, Gresham, Oregon 97080.
In memory donations may be made to OHSU school of nursing or the Alzheimer’s Association
