Shirley May Surville was born February 9, 1938 in Walla Walla, WA to Verna Allcorn Hull and DeLance Hull. Shirley grew up in Walla Walla, WA and spent a lot of her youth on the East Coast. She became very close with her East Coast family; Aunt Orian “Ann”, Uncle Chuck and cousins Jeanne, Mike & Dave. Her fondest memories as a child were of going to the beach for family reunions. Shirley moved to Portland, OR to attend University of Portland and graduated with a BA in English and a minor is Astronomy. On the campus of UofP she met her soon to be husband; Louis Surville from Australia who came to the U.S on a tennis scholarship. Shirley and Louis married in 1960. They had three children; Danielle, Chris & Marc. Shirley and Louis later separated and Shirley relocated with the children to Hermiston, OR where her family owned Stone Hereford Cattle Ranch. She accepted a position with the Oregon Employment Office and raised her children in the area around family. After her children were grown Shirley moved back to Portland and continued working for the Oregon Employment Office, living in Washington DC for a short time, then retiring Downtown Portland.....She really enjoyed the city life from the the Saturday market, Food Carts, Powell’s Bookstore, Portland Art Museum, Keller Auditorium, Favorite Shops and Restaurants all in walking distance or a trolly ride away.
Shirley was a longtime active member of the D.A.R “Daughter’s of the American Revolution” and was an avid reader; always with her nose in a good book, her favorites were historical, political or a travel book about the many places she’s been or was on her “must see” list. She definitely caught the travel bug and enjoyed many overseas adventures such as cruising down the Amazon River in South America, camping in the Outback of Australia, Kissing the Blarney Stone in Ireland, experiencing the holiday season in Germany. As a tourist she would immerse herself in the culture; enjoying museums, art, architecture, music, dance, food, and fun experiences. One of her favorite places to travel was to New Zealand where she enjoyed her vacation home with family.
Shirley was proceeded in death by her father, DeLance Hull; mother, Verna Allcorn Stone (Howard Stone). Sister-in-law, Marilyn Hull. Aunt, Orian “Ann” Lamanna and Uncle Charles “Chuck” Lamanna.
Shirley is survived by her brother, Gary Hull of Issaquah, WA; Daughter, Danielle (Greg) Richardson of Fairview, OR; Son, Christopher Surville, Lake Tahoe, NV; Son, Marc (Robyn) Surville of Feilding, New Zealand. Grandchildren; Brianna (Jared) Lamb, Nicholas (Savannah) Richardson, Taryn Surville, Michael Surville & Eden Surville. Great grandchildren; Bryce Lamb & Savannah Lamb.
