

Born in Franklinton, Louisiana, he was the son of the late Job Tippins and Mary Ozzie Sylvest Tippins. Dr. Tippins was a graduate of Auburn University, where he received B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees. He was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Griffin.
After graduating from Auburn University in 1942, Dr. Tippins entered the U.S. Army as an artillery officer. He served in World War-II campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals as a result of his service in World War-II.
Dr. Tippins, a 56-year resident of Griffin, was an entomologist, professor, and department head at the University of Georgia Experiment Station in Experiment, Georgia. He was a member and past president (1965) of the Georgia Entomological Society, and a member of the Entomological Society of America.
Survivors include three sons and two daughters, McLean Tippins, Mary Tippins Cain, Nancy Tippins, Phillip Tippins, and Russell Tippins; three sisters, Lillie Little, Minnie Fries, Patricia Hudson; one brother, Rankin W. Tippins; grandchildren, Carolyn Cain Burch, Elizabeth Cain Gilley, Springer Cain, and Katherine Tippins; great-grandchildren William Gilley, Winifred Burch, and Matthew Springer Cain; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Glen B. Tippins and Philip H. M. Tippins; and three sisters, Mary O. Williams, Frances E. Tippins, and Jodie “Jo” Vise.
A memorial service will be held at St. George’s Episcopal Church on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 2:00 p.m.
