Barbara Jean Leiter

BARBARA JEAN (STOKE) LEITER A longtime resident of Grosse Pointe Farms, Barbara Leiter was born in Detroit to parents Kendrick and Marion Stoke on April 27, 1928. After graduating from Denby High School, Barbara attended Wayne State University. At Wayne State, she was a member of the Theta chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau, receiving her B.S. degree in Education in 1951. After WWII she met and married Werner A. Leiter, a navy veteran and lifelong Detroiter, on August 12, 1950. Barbara taught at Detroit Day School for the deaf until they started their family. It was at that time that they moved to Grosse Pointe Farms. The family acquired a summer cabin on Sapphire Lake, near Cadillac, Michigan. There Barbara enjoyed many summers swimming, fishing, blueberry picking, card playing and watching beautiful sunsets across the lake. As the children grew older, Werner and Barbara would spend February and March at their condo on Treasure Island, Florida. Barbara loved sea shell hunting. Throughout her life, Barbara was a naturalist, loving the outdoors, the wildlife, flowers, trees and rock formations. She instilled this love for nature in her children. She also had a big heart for God. She was a spiritual leader in the house and was always supportive of the church and its effort to change lives. Barbara and Werner gave generously through the years to send youth camping or on other activities. Among her other hobbies; Barbara loved rock hunting, bird watching, gardening, playing pinochle with the family and baking pies. She lived a full life, leaving this world on March 15, 2017 at 11:00pm. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Werner and is survived by her children; Ken (Carmela) Leiter, Tom (Sharon) Leiter and Susan (Scott) Sudney. Grandchildren; Kendrick, Julia, Jeremy, Andrew, Stephen, Thomas, Alex and Sam. Great Grandchildren; Kellan, Mikaila, Kendrick Michael, Zoe and Vito Anthony. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday at noon at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave., at Vernier Rd., Grosse Pointe Woods.
