Craig is survived by his children Bryan (Samantha), Chad (Alethea), and Christie (Pete) Fromm. He was the proud grandfather of Alison, Olivia, Colton, Tinsley, and Spencer, as well as the dear brother of Claude and Janine, and the cherished uncle and friend of many.
Born to Carmon and Richard Babcock on December 1, 1954, in Detroit, Craig grew up on the city’s east side, attending St. John Berchman’s School and graduating from Servite High in 1972. As a boy Craig was a Boy Scout, devoting time and energy to developing his skills, character and commitment to service. At the young age of eleven Craig began working, first taking a Detroit Free Press paper route, then servicing cars at the Harper-Outer Drive Shell station. He would continue that work ethic throughout his life, working for 20+ years for GM as a clay model maker.
In 1976 he married Kathy Knoblock and started a family, having two sons and a daughter. They raised their children in a loving household filled with family, friends, hosting parties, and plenty of activity, like playing sports, daddy-daughter dances, camping, fishing, and taking vacations, especially to St. Ignace. Craig was very involved in the kids’ lives, both at home and in their activities. He coached many of their soccer teams, including the Fraser High School JV team, and served as president of the Fraser Soccer League, where he expanded the league by developing new fields to increase opportunity for more kids. Family was of the utmost importance to Craig, and he felt great pride in seeing his children grow into honorable and successful adults.
Craig will always be known for his love for life, infectious laugh, and whistling ability. He loved dancing, blues & classic rock music, working on cars with his sons, and NASCAR racing. Craig had a generous heart, cherished his time with family and friends and was always willing to lend a hand. He could always be found either puttering outside, working in his garage, or tinkering with his resourceful inventions. Craig will be missed by all who knew him, especially the annual Babcock U.P. fishing trip crew as well as those at the casinos he would frequent along the way. His spirit, his smile, his charisma, his generosity, and his hearty one-of-a-kind laugh will always be remembered.
Visitation will take place at A. H. Peters Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe Woods on Thursday June 8th from 2pm-8pm. A funeral mass will be held Friday June 9th at St. Isaac Jogues in St. Clair Shores at 10:30am with in-state at 10am. Please note that Madison is under construction. Please use the 10 Mile Rd entrance between Little Mack Ave. and Harper Ave.
